From endless growth to a new form of democracy: Nafeez Mosadeqq Ahmed

Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed take us on a journey crammed with apparently discouraging facts about the state of our world today, but he manages to answer the question:
“How can the world move from a paradigm ruled by a few, who have had constant growth as the major goal, to a paradigm with community cooperation guiding the creation of a prosperous society for all?”
in a way that makes you want to start acting today. (Filmed at TEDxHornstull)

Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed is a bestselling author, international security analyst and consultant. He is Chief Research Officer at Unitas Communications and founder and president of the Institute for Policy Research & Development (IPRD). Nafeez also wrote and produced the documentary feature film The Crisis of Civilization.

“We are all aware of the devastating findings of Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change, the worst case scenario on a business as usual trajectory, you are all aware, global average temperatures will raise by six degrees Celcius by the end of this century. An inhabitable planet.”

“We could see a raise of 10 to 12 degree Celsius by the end of this century”

“With four fifths of the United states in drought, prolonged droughts in Russia and Africa and a lighter monsoon in India all due to climate change.”

“By mid century if we fail to act world crop yields could fall by as much as 20-40 % due to global warming alone.”

In 2012 the International Energy Agency acknowledge that world conventional oil production had most likely peaked in 2006

“Sir King also argues that oil companies have overestimated world oil reserves by about a third, so we are in trouble folks.”

“This is because the growth that we have experienced during the last decades has been tied inextricably to the systematic expansion of debt.”

“The heart of the problem is the squid structure of our current form of capitalism, which make endless material growth at any cost a seminal rational logical imperative”

“What is this structure let’s pin it down, it comes down to who owns the earth, todays capitalism is based on a completely unnatural condition where approximately 1 to 5 % of the worlds population own the entirety of the planets productive resources.”

“These are not separate crisis. They are interconnected symptoms of a global crises of civilization.”

“So how do we respond? We must first awaken to the reality that this isn’t the end but the beginning.”

“What we are witnessing is the collapse of the old paradigm.”

“In the UK there are 43 communities producing renewable energy through cooperative ownership structures.”

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
